Driver Charged With Murder After Striking Man With Chevy Suburban In Maryland: State Police

A woman who allegedly ran down a man she was involved in an ongoing relationship with in St. Mary's County during a disagreement is facing murder and other charges following an investigation by Maryland State Police.

Simone Stewart, 50, has been arrested in connection to the death of Demeatrum Scarborough, 53, who died on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Medstar Washington Hospital, one day after she ran him over with a truck.

Both are from Lexington Park.

Police believe Stewart and Scarborough were in a relationship, and further investigation found that they were in an altercation at the time the incident occurred, leading to a murder charge for Stewart. 

Before 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, troopers were called to the area of Spring Valley Drive and Valley Court in Lexington Park for the report of a pedestrian struck by a Chevrolet Suburban.

Upon arrival, they found Scarborough suffering from critical injuries. He was flown by a state police helicopter to the hospital, where he later succumbed to the injuries.

Investigators say that Stewart was the driver at the time, and she was allegedly intoxicated.

Stewart was charged with:

  • Second-degree murder;
  • First-degree assault;
  • Homicide by motor vehicle;
  • Driving under the influence.

She is being held at the St. Mary's County Detention Center pending an appearance before a court commissioner.
